Our third category in this year’s photo competition is landscapes. Thiscovers scenic photos of sunrises, sunsets, forests, beaches,mountains... the list is endless. And don’t forget, landscapes are notjust about sweeping panoramas, they can include close-ups as well. Tohelp you with some top tips, we sought the advice of Barbados-basedphotographer Mike Toy, who is responsible for the incredible photos yousee on this page (visit www.miketoy.com to see more).
Mike Toy’s top tips for landscape photography• Be patient and choose your time of day carefully. Early morningand late afternoon sun provide long shadows and highlights textures, while dawn and dusk provide a unique palette of colours. • Use a tripod wherever possible. A large depth of field means a smallaperture and thus a slower shutter speed. Tripods also slow down thepicture-taking process and will give you more time to think about whatyou are doing. • Experiment with your lenses. Typically, landscape photographers usewide-angle lenses, but the other end of the scale – for example a 500mm lens – will compress perspective with dramatic results. • Use filters. At the very least use a UV or skylight filter to cuthaze. A polariser is more effective because it also reduces reflectionsand saturates colours. It will, however, increase contrast and usuallycauses a small shift in colour balance.
