1st Runner-up
“Beautiful lighting, warm and low, that picks up the texture of the beach and the grass and casts nice deep shadows. The main subject is well positioned and kind of quirky, and there is a nice gradation in the sky from left to right. It might have been an idea to move the camera position to exclude some, or all, of the tree in the left of the frame. And it would certainly be a good idea to straighten the horizon! But a nice shot nonetheless.”
Paula Stanley, Reading, UK
2nd Runner-up
“Well what can you say about his? Without the dramatic sunset this shot would not have the visual impact that it does. But of course that is one of the pre-requisites of any photograph – being in the right place at the right time. The positioning of the peninsula in the bottom left hand corner leads the eye from left to right across the picture and the rocks seem to be marching off into the distance. It’s not the most common composition but in this case it works well. The clouds lead the eye from the top right corner back down toward the centre of the image and there would have been nothing to gain by including more of the sea in the foreground. There is little detail in the water so much better to show more of the sky. It might have been interesting to darken the water even further. That way the viewer would be in two minds as to whether this was shot in the desert or at sea.

AND THE WINNER!
“I just love this shot. I think the composition is great and the image is well balanced. It has human interest and activity, the timing is perfect and the bird swooping low over the water adds a sense of movement. The choice of focal length has accentuated the size of the setting sun and compressed the perspective. All in all, a great shot.”
