(Issue 9 - October 2010)
Employee awards, career days, our fleet, a book written by Liats chairman... and much more
Congratulations!
LIAT’s Network Baggage Coordinator Denis Jules has been awarded the
prestigious ‘Customer Service Employee of the Year Award for 2010’ by
the Antigua Hotel and Tourism Association (AH&TA) for his
outstanding contribution to the development of tourism in Antigua and
Barbuda. The judges affirmed that Jules has consistently acted as a true
service ambassador to guests/customers, going beyond the call of duty
on many occasions. Jules, who describes himself as a hardworking,
thoughtful and collective professional, is elated about receiving the
award. “I am deserving of this award because my job mainly encompasses
all facets of society; it’s where people are greeted with what Antigua
and Barbuda has to offer before going to a hotel, transiting to another
country, joining a cruise ship or even visiting family,” he said. LIAT
Customer Service Director, Sonya John, said that Jules is the kind of
employee that the company can be proud of. “Once you know Jules is on
the case, you feel confident that passengers are treated with respect,
consideration and compassion, and will probably have benefitted from his
unique sense of humour somewhere along the line! We are delighted that
he won, he is very deserving of this award.”
Back to school - A team of LIAT employees, led by HR
Manager Terry-Ann Benjamin Hector, recently took part in a Career Day at
the Antigua-based Princess Margaret Secondary School. Students got the
chance to interact with staff members about the many career
opportunities offered by the company. If you’re interested in working

Our fleet
LIAT operates a fleet of 17 Dash 8 100/300 aircraft, which have proved
to be safe, economical and reliable, a favourite for airlines flying the
frequencies and range
of our Caribbean routes. The latest
models (Q100/Q300) use an advanced Noise Vibration Suppression system to
reduce cabin noise and vibration dramatically, making it the quietest,
most vibration-free turboprop aircraft in the sky today.
• Crew: 2+1
• Passengers: 50
• Engines: Two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123B turboprops
• Power: 2500shp
• Cruise speed: 285 knots (528km/h)
• Maximum range: 2034km
• Maximum take-off weight: 19,505kg
• Average cabin noise level: 75dBA
specs apply to the Q300 model only
Did you know…
aircraft coatings play a far more important role than just cosmetic
appearance. They protect the very thin structure from the detrimental
effects of corrosion and contribute to better aerodynamic performance
which reduces the fuel burn. Spraying of an aircraft is normally done
by a team of painters, and in the world of aviation where the focus is
normally on the front line staff serving the customers, very rarely does
the focus shift to the mechanic. So let’s hear it for Ernest Bradshaw’s
team of Painters at LIAT for doing such a great job.
Great read
LIAT’s Chairman, Dr. Jean Holder, has recently launched a book on air
transportation in the Caribbean. Entitled, Don’t Burn our Bridges – The
case for owning airlines, it is part of a trilogy dealing with air
transportation, tourism and the socio-political issues Holder
encountered during his 50 years as a regional public servant. “It is
written from the perspective of the person who provides air
transportation rather than from that of those who use it,” said Holder.
“It aims to give an explanation of why things are often as they are, and
a call for a better understanding of what is indeed a very complicated
and difficult business.” Holder said the book aims to be a comprehensive
response to the many questions about airline policies and air
transportation asked on a daily basis by the general public. If you’re
one of those people get hold of a copy of the book now.

Lost… and found!
Upon arriving at the Canouan terminal on April 30, I was unable to
locate important documents. I determined that they must have fallen down
the side of my window seat. One of your ground staff, Martin,
immediately called the plane to have them check for them when they got
to Grenada. The documents were on the plane and were returned on the
next flight to Canouan. What a relief! I thank Martin and everyone else
involved in quickly helping me recover my documents. Vivian Lawless
Making the best of it
My flight was delayed at St Maarten by a technical problem causing it to
be four hours late to Antigua. As a direct result I missed my onward
international flight to London. I was highly frustrated with this
situation. However, I felt you did a great job of sorting out food,
overnight accommodation, a LIAT flight to Barbados and an onward
connection by BA to London. You acted quickly, efficiently, politely and
effectively to turn a disastrous situation into one that was just about
bearable and I am extremely grateful.

Happy Landings
We just wanted to tell you how much we appreciate your good service and
your wonderful pilots. During our recent flights to Grenada, everyone
treated us terrifically. We thought the flights were extremely smooth
and the take-offs and landings were exceptional – we didn’t catch the
pilots’ names, but just want to say thank you for such outstanding
service – and to let you know just how much it added to our vacation in
Grenada.
