(Issue 9 - Oct 2010) LIAT flies to Guadeloupe daily. Here are ten reasons why you should be on board one of those flights... 1. La Soufrière If you’re feeling fit, it’s a strenuous one-and-a-half-hour climb to the top of La Soufrière, a still-active volcano, but it’s worth it for the views at the top. 2. Jardin Botanique A must-see spot along Basse-Terre’s north coast, these expansive gardens feature waterfalls, lily ponds, orchid-covered trellises, and are also home to parrots, loriquets and pink flamingos. Y www.jardin-botanique.com 3. La Réserve Cousteau If you want to enjoy some memorable diving or snorkelling, head for the preserved underwater sanctuary of the Pigeon Isles in the La Réserve Cousteau (named after the renowned marine biologist Jacques Cousteau) which is filled with multi-coloured fauna. 4. Museum of Rum Located in Sainte Rose, exhibits include a distillery, a barrel workshop and plenty of artefacts that retrace the history of rum production on the island. You’ll also find a ‘Beautiful Insects’ museum here and a miniature ships collection. Y Tel: 590 28 7 004 5. The National Park of Guadeloupe This incredible park provides around 300km (188 miles) of marked trails leading into the rainforest, where you’ll be able to enjoy many tropical animals and plants. The scenery on these walks often includes waterfalls (such as the Cascade aux Ecrevisses) or lakes (such as the Grand Etang). 6. Golf De St-Francois This well-known course designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr. runs alongside a 320- hectare lagoon where windsurfing, water-skiing and sailing take place. It’s a challenging par 72 course with water traps on six of the 18 holes. Y Tel: 590 884 187 7. Conch Festival If you’re lucky enough to be in Guadeloupe in November, don’t miss the Conch Festival in Vieux-Bourg. Taste soup, kebab, fricassée and other dishes made from conch, and treat yourself to handicrafts made with the beautiful pink mother of pearl interior. Y For more details call 590 687 211 8. Parc Archéologique des Roches Gravées Before the arrival of the French colonisers, Trois-Rivières was a significant Amerindian settlement. You can see traces of the original tenants at this fascinating park, including blackened boulders engraved with cartoon-like human petroglyphs dating from circa 300 AD. 9. Les Chutes de Carbet These magnificent waterfalls originate 1300m up La Soufriere’s flanks and plummet down 10km inland from the N1 north of Trois-Rivières. There are three in total, but the middle one (referred to by Christopher Columbus in his diary) is the most accessible and has a mighty 110-metre cascade. 10. Aquarium de la Guadeloupe Keep the kids happy with a trip to this attraction which features open turtle and shark aquariums. • www.aquariumdelaguadeloupe.com |
