Eating out in Anguilla PDF Print E-mail
(Issue 4: July 2009)
Well known for its luxury hotels and extensive sandy beaches, Anguilla is the perfect place to relax, and with its array of excellent restaurants, it is also a great place to dine out. Indeed, the island is fast becoming known as a gourmand’s destination. Montague Kobbe selects six of the best:

1 Hibernia Restaurant
Arguably among the most exquisite restaurants not only in Anguilla but in the entire Caribbean, this is a unique place where the passions and idiosyncrasies of owners Raoul and Mary Pat successfully blend to create the ultimate dining experience. Sitting dramatically above the fishing village of Island Harbour, the restaurant is subtly decorated with oriental works of art. The South-East Asian ambience extends to Raoul’s cooking style, as he adapts exotic recipes to suit the local produce. While perhaps not the place for traditionalists, it offers ample reward to more adventurous palates.

2 Straw Hat Restaurant
For the greater part of the past two decades this restaurant has been named among the best in the island. Its strong reputation remains undiminished now that it has moved from its emblematic location at The Forrest to the Frangipani Beach Resort at Meads Bay. If anything, this change has enhanced the value of a good traditional meal with the breathtaking scenery of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. On big sporting occasions a huge screen is fitted on the terrace, while Sunday brunch has become its trademark.

3 Côté Mer
Anguilla’s best-kept secret is quickly becoming public. Located in Island Harbour, this charming restaurant has mastered the fine art of combining simplicity with excellence and a touch of humour. With French recipes adapted to enhance the best local products, this is Creole cuisine at its best. Look out for the restaurant’s great offers on its standard two-course menu – if nothing else it will be an entertaining read! For a romantic dinner, ask owner Michel in advance to set up a table outdoors among the trees, under the stars.

4 Smokey’s Restaurant
Spectacularly located on the sheltered end of Cove Bay, one of Anguilla’s most beautiful beaches, this restaurant is quickly becoming a new favourite for lunch or casual dinner thanks to the enthusiastic management of Clyde Gumbs. Delightfully restored from the damages caused by Hurricane Omar, the place is enhanced by lively colours, beautiful woodwork and comfortable seating. A blend of local ingredients and cosmopolitan recipes give Smokey’s a wonderful sense of relaxed sophistication, which is complemented by its accommodating staff, its stunning setting and the wide array of beach games available to entertain the little ones (of age or spirit). Live music four days a week is highly popular among locals.

5 Johnno’s Beach Stop
An institution among locals and tourists alike, Johnno’s has long been at the heart of the action in what still today remains Anguilla’s most happening area: Sandy Ground. The ideal place for a typically West Indian meal in a relaxed atmosphere right at the foot of the island’s main harbour, the restaurant’s fresh fish dishes certainly count among Anguilla’s most delicious luxuries. Jazz Sundays provide a particularly pleasant luncheon experience to visitors with a liking for the music, with invigorating live performances by some of the island’s most accomplished musicians setting the tone for a totally carefree afternoon.

6 E’s Oven Restaurant & Bar
If the English-speaking Caribbean were to furnish an answer to the French bistro, this is exactly what it would look like: fresh, simple and utterly relaxed. Unapologetically placed on one of the busiest corners of South Hill, E’s Oven offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a good meal away from the sand, sun and beach that, at times, can become so overwhelming in Anguilla. Be it conch, goat, fish or chicken, Vernon will produce a quality island dish to eat in or take away. And the best thing is it’ll all come at a very reasonable price.
