The inside track on getting the best out of Barbados by Heather Barker

LIME Experience the Friday night lime at Oistins, the south coast fishing village. Grilled or fried flying fish, dolphin, blue marlin and more are washed down to pulsing music with a dash of ballroom dancing. And the newly-refurbished facilities blend with the rustic charm. Moontown in St. Lucy is also well-known for its Bajan fare and atmosphere. Those in search of tranquility head to Bathsheba on the island’s east coast. It’s easy to reach by car or bus, but hard to leave, with its fierce beauty, ideal for surfers. The lilting breezes and welcoming beach houses offer serenity and a home away from home. Bathsheba Polo Club often fields world-class teams against the best of Barbados. You don’t have to know anything about polo to enjoy the game – it’s all about the lime.

LEARN For living history head for Speightstown. Unpretentious in its beauty Speightstown, sometimes called Little Bristol because of trading connections to that city in the 17th century, is tucked away in the north. Visit Arlington House Museum, an 18th-century building with three floors of exhibits, or discover the town’s boutique and chain shops. Then sample the fare of the wayside vendors, cafés or the Fisherman’s Pub, and end with a long stroll across the beach by Almond Beach Village and Port St Charles.

LOVE Bajans love their cricket and culinary delights in equal measure! On Saturdays take a scenic drive to the Village Bar in Lemon Arbor or the Souse Factory, both in St. John, for pudding and souse. That’s pig’s head and trotters served in a cucumber, onion, lime and pepper pickle with a sausage stuffed with sweet potato. Then head for one of the many cricket grounds for a lively match. When you hear heavy slamming on a table and loud animated chatter, fear not, it’s just a game of dominoes. You’ll see groups of four or more duelling at the game. It’s serious sport here, as are road tennis and motor sports.

LIVE Bajans love shopping and throng to the capital, Bridgetown, to indulge. Broad Street proffers designer wear and jewellery, while Swan Street lures many with its wide array of bargains and household goods. For fresh and well-priced fruit and veg venture out early on a Saturday morning to Cheapside Market.  For exercise combined with relaxation head for the new South Coast Boardwalk for beautiful vistas of the sea or the historic Garrison Savannah which is nearby.
