Its What I Do! (April) PDF Print E-mail
(Issue 7 - April 2010)
Ever wondered what the person sitting next to you in the airport lounge does for a living?

• Name:  Fiona Austin-McDonald
• From:  Antigua
• Job title: First Officer (co-pilot) with LIAT
• What does it involve?
My work begins when I check in to our operations centre and involves monitoring the weather for our routes, fuel requirements, navigation, communications with Air Traffic Controllers, observing aircraft systems while flying and, most importantly, flying the aircraft safely within its specifications.
• How did you get into it?
Most people assume I got into piloting because of my Dad, Captain Wade Austin-McDonald, who also flies for LIAT, but it was a decision based solely on my experience as a flight attendant. I got into that to give myself some time to figure out what career I wanted. I had no intention of being a pilot till early 2008.
• if i was not a pilot?
I would most likely be in university, studying forensic science or computer science, and definitely playing soccer.
