Five Environmental New Year Resolutions
1. Buy products that are not over-packaged, e.g those that have the least number of layers.
2. Choose glass over plastic; cardboard and paper are fine too.
3. Separate your waste-paper and card; glass; cans and other metals; plastics; and organic materials – ideally to make your own compost.
4. Remember to re-use, repair, or recycle! It’s better to find another use
for something or to use it again. If it is broken, repair it, and if you
can’t do either, take it to be recycled. Anything is better than
landfill.
5. Buy local produce whenever possible to reduce your carbon footprint.
Underwater Success
Artist Jason deCaires Taylor proves that art and environmentalism can work hand in hand with impressive results...
What’s going on here?
In May 2006, artist Jason deCaires Taylor established the world’s first underwater sculpture park in Grenada. Molinere Bay is now home to 65 sculptures, spread over an area of 800 square metres.
Why do it?
In his own words, Jason says, “by creating an artificial reef of sculptures, the ultimate aim of the project is to form a platform to promote the regeneration of marine life and to use sculpture as a means of conveying hope and environmental awareness.” The bay on the west coast of Grenada had suffered considerable storm damage over recent years, notably with hurricanes Ivan and Emily, and the placement of an artificial structure has provided a new base for marine life to proliferate. The sculptures were also designed to create a diversion from other areas of coral reef currently endangered by over-use from water activities.
Has it worked?
Yes! After three years beneath the Grenadian waters the latest growth of sponges, tunicates, hydroids, soft and hard corals has been beyond all expectations.
Its What I Do!
Ever wondered what the person sitting next to you in the airport lounge does for a living?
Name: Elisabeth Williams
From: Grenada
Job Title: Owner of ‘Homestays Grenada’ (www.homestaysgrenada.com )
What does it involve?
My husband and I are the link between visitors to the island and local people who want to share their homes with them. We match the visitor to a host who has the same interests and let them share our culture.
How did you get into it?
In 2000 we wanted to let ordinary folks in the rural areas benefit from tourism. We started with friends, and friends of friends, and spread out to include families all over Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
What else would I do?
I am also a yoga teacher and aspiring author!

Feng shui your home
If you feel your energy being sapped away at home, it might be worth applying a few feng shui principles to your interiors to give yourself and your rooms a boost…
• According to the art of feng shui, the colours you choose for your home can affect your mood, so think carefully before you redecorate. For instance, red is the colour of energy and excitement, which works well for an entertaining space such as the dining room, while yellow inspires happiness and creativity and will add vitality to a kitchen or breakfast room.
• Keep the centre of your house as CLEAN AND TIDY as possible. Ancient feng shui masters believe that we are all born with a certain amount of available energy to be used throughout our lives – if it’s a battle to get anywhere in your house because you’re fighting though mess and clutter, this in itself is believed to sap the energy out of you.
• Think carefully about your hallway or entrance. To ensure it has an uplifting energy for yourself and visitors as soon as they arrive in your house it needs to be well lit, CLUTTER-FREE and as spacious as possible.
• Finally, a way to keep your spirits and energy up while you’re in the home is to surround yourself with objects you love and people who uplift your spirits.
