A big thank you to ZiNG reader Dr Julian Ferdinand for getting in touch to tell us about the fantastic environmental work being done by the local community in Mustique…

“When I visited Mustique recently I met up with Ty Kovach, Senior Manager of The Mustique Company, who told me about their Summer Conservation Programme. Introduced in 2008, the programme recruits approximately 15 young people between the ages of 11 and 17 during the long school holiday period, and these youngsters are then introduced to a number of environment enhancement projects, including tree planting, restoration, general beautification, and environmental performance measurement.  In addition, the organisers invite experienced individuals to lecture on a variety of environmental topics.

Although the company provides the youngsters with monetary incentives, the energy and excitement as they participate in this worthwhile programme provides strong evidence that they also derive a great sense of satisfaction from engaging in these activities.

I’d like to take this opportunity to tip my hat to the relatively small community on Mustique and their determination to make their small part of the world more beautiful and environmentally friendly.  We should thank them for challenging us to do the same in our corner of this plural nation.  They remind us that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can create and sustain positive changes in this beautiful part of the world.”
