(Issue 6 - January 2010) Our at-a-glance look at events near you this quarter... 21, 23 & 24 JANUARY For excitement: Slam-a-Dom Extravaganza, Barbados Slam-a-Dom is the annual international tournament created by competition domino players to promote the sport. This is a favourite pastime of Bajans and one they clearly excel at having claimed the World Champion title. The competition is played in both four-hand and three-hand formats, with monetary prizes for winners. 22 January For music lovers: 1st annual St Thomas Blues Festival This exciting debut event starts at 8pm at the Reichhold Center. Star performers will include Blues Music Award Nominee Curtis Salgado, International Blues Challenge winners ‘Trampled Under Foot’, and two-time blues music award winner Eden Brent. 4-7 March For serious fun: 30th St Maarten Heineken Regatta A highlight of St Maarten’s year, the Heineken Regatta attracts international attention as boats of all shapes and sizes come to race and party. For some exhilarating entertainment watch the proceedings from Simpson Bay, where most races begin and end. This is the event’s 30th celebration and, as always, the Regatta organisation abide by their mantra of ‘serious fun’, so why not join the party? 24-28 January For fishing fanatics: Spice Island Billfish Tournament Angling enthusiasts from across the world relish Grenada’s idyllic fishing conditions at the annual Spice Island Billfish Tournament off the coast of St George’s. Points are awarded for blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, wahoo and mahi mahi, with prizes up to US$1000. 13-14 February For market lovers: St Croix Agrifest One of the largest events of the region’s agricultural calendar, this annual fair attracts farmers and craftspeople from the surrounding area. The event includes a craft market, fruit and produce market, live music, cooking exhibitions and fun events such as horse and donkey rides. 27 Frebruary For fitness: 13th Annual Gatorade Eight Tuff Miles Race, St John This course begins and ends at sea level and along the way runners will reach an elevation of 999 ft.
