Your health - the common cold PDF Print E-mail
Fact or fiction?

Fact: A cold can be caused by over 200 different viruses.
This is the reason why it is very difficult for our body’s immune system to build up any resistance, and also why we can suffer up to 10 colds a year.

Fiction: Colds are caused by bad weather.
Incidences of colds may increase during the colder months but this is probably because people tend to remain together indoors – perfect conditions for spreading cold viruses. However, you can catch a cold all year round, so beware!

Fact: By the time we reach the age of 75, we are likely to have caught around 200 colds.
This equates to about two years of sneezing and blowing your nose!

• If you want to help your body to fight off a cold, give your immune system a daily boost with vitamin C, echinacea and zinc, all of which are found in vitamin supplement, Haliborange Immune PLUS.

Eat more: Plantains
This superstar of the vegetable world can help lower blood pressure, prevent and treat ulcers, prevent constipation and decrease the risk of heart disease. One cup of cooked plantains contains 716 milligrams (20%) of the daily value of potassium which is well established as a key mineral for heart disease prevention. A cup will also provide approximately 49 milligrams of magnesium, (more than 12% of the daily value), which is another mineral that can help lower blood pressure, especially among people who are sensitive to sodium.

Five things you should know before you buy a pair of sneakers
Running is a great way to get fit, but doing it in the wrong shoes could do more harm than good, so when you buy your next pair of sneakers …
1 Size up
Whatever your everyday shoe size, you need to go up by one or one and a half sizes for running shoes. Your feet need more room when you run, as they tend to swell up and can slip forwards with every step, hitting the end of the shoe and giving you black toenails.
2 Running costs
You don’t need to spend a fortune, but don’t be tempted by a ‘budget’ version. You need to ensure you get a durable shoe with enough technology to protect you from injuries.
3 Wise words
No two people are the same, so don’t buy sneakers purely on a friend’s recommendation. Go to a specialist running shop where the assistants are trained to find the right shoes for you, and will watch you run in several different pairs to make sure you have a perfect fit.
4 Dress code
Wear sports socks when you go shopping for sneakers to get a good idea of how they fit.
5 Try, try again
If you’ve spent hours in the shop but are still nervous about investing, ask about the returns policy. Some running shops will let you buy the shoes, run two or three times on a treadmill, and still take them back for an exchange if you’re unhappy.
